Allowances:
There are several benefits and allowances available to parents of Ichthyotic children and also to adult sufferers of Ichthyosis.
Domicilliary Care Allowance – a monthly allowance, payable for care over and above the normal care of a child.  It is payable until the child is 16 and is not means tested.  It also includes a yearly respite payment.
  • Dependant Relative Allowance – an allowance claimed through P.A.Y.E.  You simply ring the tax office and give them your details and the details of your dependant relative.  It is not means tested.
  • Disabled child - It is not means tested.
  • Carer’s Allowance – this allows the parent to take 15 months unpaid leave from their employment while having the option of returning to work at the end of the 15 months.  When you qualify for this allowance, you also qualify for a phone allowance, heating allowance and a free t.v. license aswell as a travel pass.  You also qualify for a respite care allowance, but if claiming domiciallary allowance, the respite allowance is paid with the Carer’s Allowance instead.
  • Carer’s Benefit – is means tested.  If at the end of the 15 months the parent decides not to return to work, they can switch to this benefit.  It is less than the Carere’s allowance, but included the phone and heating, allowances, t.v. license and travel pass.
  • Medical Card – is means tested.
  • Disabled car sticker.
At the moment, skin care products are not covered by any allowance or medical card scheme.  However, it is possible to get “a letter of hardship” from you g.p. to appeal to your local H.S.E. for an allowance/payment for skin care.
